New Year’s Resolutions for Moms

New Year’s Resolutions for Moms

How to start your year off the right way.

This is the first year that I’ve really focused on creating some resolutions for the new year. I’ve always thought of them as a negative – something that doesn’t end up making you feel good, or proud, or strong. So I’ve avoided them. But this year, I’m charging forward with a number of GOALS. Both personally and professionally, this next year is going to be the year that I focus and really set out how I’m going to reach my goals.

How to Choose Your Goals

Your goals should be meaningful to you, have a focus, and have a time frame. Don’t just feel the need to say you’ll eat healthier this year. I think that’s the easiest “resolution” to give up on. Pick one way that you will eat healthier – will you drink more water, or eat a real vegetable at each meal? And give it a time frame that works for that goal, preferably on the shorter end. New Year’s resolutions do NOT have to be a year long goal. Once you reach your goal, you can choose a new one, or keep going with the same. I find that choosing one big goal for the whole year is just too much, unless it gets broken down into smaller parts. One month, or even one week for some goals, are much more attainable. You should start off your year proud of yourself for being successful!

Goals for Yourself

I’m a mom. I have two kids, and they are everything to me. But I wholeheartedly believe that you can’t be a great mom, without taking care of yourself. Take care of your physical AND emotional AND mental health. 2019 has been a rough year for me emotionally. My mom passed away after a very long battle with mental illness and physical illness. In a way, I’m relieved that she’s not suffering anymore, but I’m also mourning the mom that I always hoped she could be. There have been many other bumps along the way this year, and I know some of those are going to feed into the next year. Focusing on myself is going to be so important! So one of my goals is to keep organized and spend ten minutes a day picking up clutter. I’m sure to you that probably doesn’t match up with keeping myself emotionally strong, but it makes perfect sense to me. I look around a messy house and can just FEEL the clutter going on inside my mind. I love neatness, but it’s definitely something that I really struggle with achieving. Hence, my goal. Goal: Spend 10 minutes each day picking up clutter for one month.

Goals for Your Family

Our family is busy. We started kindergarten this year, and wow that was such a change for us! My son also started his first year on a hockey team. Between those two things, our time during the week and on weekends is precious. My husband and I both tend to be super comfortable just hanging out at home, and while that’s really nice, I also want my kids to experience life with other people. Just us is great, but having memories with other people who are important in our lives is also precious. Focusing on spending time as a family with other people is a great way to experience life. Goal: Say yes to events or big activities with others once each month.

Goals for Your Business

A big goal I have this year is to grow my business. I started back in 2015 knowing that I wanted to build my photography business, but also knowing that I wanted to grow my family. My second baby is now old enough that I have more time to focus on clients and designing the sessions that I want to capture. I also have spent the last four years looking at different genres, and have found the areas that I want to specialize in. Maternity and Newborns surprised me by being my absolute favorite, as well as working with designers and renovation companies to photograph houses. I am going to spent this next year growing those avenues and increasing the number of clients I work with each month. One of the ways I’m going to work on this is by increasing my online presence. Goal: Blog and post to social media frequently according to the calendar I created.

Of course, there are many other things that I look at wanting to improve this year- drinking more water, losing a bit of weight, less screen time for the kids, reading more books, etc., etc., etc. But the key with goals, and making them attainable, is picking a few to really, truly focus on. This year, I even bought a Passion Planner with achieving my goals in mind. Follow the link to get 10% off yours! What goals do you have for the upcoming year? Have you written them out in a way that they are focused and have a specific time frame?
