How to Get The Most Out of Your Maternity Session

Tips to help you prepare for your pictures.

Your maternity session should be an amazing experience, but preparing for your maternity session is an important step to ensure you end up with beautiful artwork. You want to be able to look back on the pictures and think of the excitement of your new little one! You remember that you felt, and looked, amazing. There are a few main ways that you can really help get the most out of your session.

Your Wardrobe Matters

What you wear during any portrait session matters. A maternity session really gives you a chance to utilize your clothing to accentuate those beautiful female curves of pregnancy. I really recommend to all of my clients that they choose a maternity dress that makes them feel beautiful and comfortable. I suggest they look at companies like The Photographer’s Trunk, which is based in Hurst and rents dresses specifically for maternity portraits. These dresses are made to look amazing in pictures, hug all the right curves, and some even have special colors or designs. Having a rainbow baby? There are beautiful rainbow dresses that can help you remember your little one who was gone too soon.

Hair and Makeup

Getting your hair and makeup professionally done can be so helpful prior to the session. Makeup artists know how to create makeup that is flattering for you, but also works really well in photos. When you’re 32-36 weeks pregnant (the ideal time for pictures, usually), the last thing you want to do is blow dry your hair and spend time making it look its best. It can be exhausting. Getting your hair and makeup done is a great way to relax and enjoy the moment.

Little Details

There are some little details that can help prepare you for your maternity session, too. Get your nails done, or make sure they’re filed and clean. If they have polish on them, they shouldn’t be chipped. Think about what shoes you will be wearing – lots of maternity dresses don’t even show your feet, but some do. What jewelry will you be wearing? I typically don’t recommend a lot, because it can take away from the purpose of the session – your bump! But sometimes a beautiful statement necklace or earrings can provide the perfect detail.

Preparing for your maternity session shouldn’t be stressful! If you are unsure of where to start, or just need a straight up list to help you plan, we can help provide that to you so your session goes smoothly.
