Tips for Your Fresh 48

How to Prepare So You Get the Hospital Pictures You Really Want

So you’re expecting a baby – maybe she’s your first newborn, maybe your last, but you know you want to capture this moment your life changes forever. This is when you decide that you want to hire a photographer to make sure you get all of those little details. The benefit of using a photographer is that we know what details most families want, we know how to capture newborns so they look their absolute best, and we can focus on doing the work so you can just enjoy the moment. Here are some tips that will help you prepare to have a great fresh 48 session.

How can you prepare for your fresh 48?

You can plan as much or as little as you want. Some families just want to capture the real, raw moment, without having anything prepared ahead of time. Others want to make sure they have all of the little details planned. Here are some tips to make your session planning easier, or give you things to think about:

  • Plan your clothing. As you pack your hospital or birthing center bag, you might want to think about what clothes will look best in pictures. From comfy tanks to coordinating robes, there is a wide variety of clothes to select from. Solid colors (even a simple black tank or shirt), without a brand name or logo, are always great options. Some families like to buy the coordinating sets, which might include a wrap, newborn headband, and mom’s robe. These are also lovely and show personality really well. Keep in mind that you will want to be comfortable, most of all.
  • Think about custom items you might want. Letter boards are used often, as a way to announce your new baby’s birth information. I’ve also seen custom onesies, blankets, burp cloths, wooden announcement signs, and hats. These might take a while after you order them, so you definitely need to plan in advance.
  • Decide what family members will be there. If you have other children, you have some options. We can be there to capture when they meet their newest sibling for the first time, or we can be there after. If your other child is very young still, they might be overwhelmed with everything, so it would be helpful to have someone else there who can lead them out after a few minutes. Some of my families prefer to just get pictures with their new baby, and save the full family pictures until their full newborn session.
  • Determine whether you want to include any breastfeeding images. I don’t specifically set out to capture this at my fresh 48 sessions, but I like for my moms to think about it and have an answer. If baby is hungry when I’m there, I can go ahead and capture them if you’d like. If not, I can use that time to capture all of the other little details around the room.
