What to Wear for Your Newborn Session

What to Wear for Your Newborn Session

Tips for planning your outfits so that your family looks and feels their best

Newborn Family Portrait in Nursery

I get asked a lot what my clients should be wearing for their newborn session with me.  You can definitely incorporate your style into your session, while keeping the set of images beautiful and classic.  A cohesive look across all of your images is what makes a beautiful album or wall gallery.  My newborn sessions include studio style portraits, but since I offer them in your home I am also able to capture lifestyle family images.  This is such a special blend for newborn sessions.  We can incorporate the places that you spend your time – the master bedroom, nursery, and living room.

For your newborn, I bring everything that is needed.  We will discuss colors ahead of time and I’ll bring a selection that works best for your session.  I will typically bring wraps, headbands or bonnets, and an outfit or two.  When we move to our family portraits, a simple wrap is my favorite way to capture those moments.  It keeps your little one snug and supported, and keeping it a neutral or simple color will enhance the overall images.

Siblings

Older siblings are always included in our newborn sessions, whether they are still a toddler or much older.  When you are thinking about what they wear, please think about making sure they are comfortable.  This helps them be relaxed in front of the camera for me.  It also helps prevent fidgeting!  Shoes are not needed for family images unless you have an outdoor space you’d like to shoot in.  Try to have one outfit, as well as a backup just in case something happens.  Again, simple is best.  Neutral colors and no big graphic designs.  Make sure the clothes fit properly, so you don’t have to keep readjusting during the session.

Mom

Moms always look beautiful in a comfy dress or a top and skirt combo.  Keep to solid colors that are fairly neutral, like navy, dark green, or ivory or black.  Patterns can work too, but you don’t want them to be distracting.  I suggest planning for a bit more coverage up top. Holding the baby, or an older child, can tug on the top and it’s easier to keep everything covered if it’s not scrappy or low cut.  You are also welcome to use one of my maternity gowns if you’d like!

Partner

Once you have siblings and mom figured out, it’s easier to figure out your partner and what they wear.  Stick to neutral colors, patterns that don’t distract, and clothing that fits well.  Solid colored t-shirts or long sleeve shirts are great.

Pets

Four legged friends are also welcome to join the family pictures!  If you would like them to join, it’s a good idea to have them recently groomed.  They will also get to look their best!
